Engineering Co-op

The Faculty of Engineering offers a Bachelor of Engineering Co-operative Education program (BEng Co-op).  Co-operative Education (Co-op) is a program where academic study is combined with career-related work experience by completing work terms that are discipline-related, career-focused and paid. Co-op work terms are interspersed with academic study terms so that students apply what they learn in class to real-world work situations and then upon returning to campus, apply what they have learned at work to their classroom studies, thereby enriching their learning. It also helps students to explore their career options by test-driving different work environments before they graduate.  Students who successfully complete the Co-op program receive a Co-op degree designation upon graduation and will have gained valuable work experience enabling them to make informed career choices.

Engineering Co-op Study and Work Term Schedules

The co-operative education program requires students to alternate periods of study with periods of university approved, full-time, paid employment. The period of employment is called a work term and is normally four months (16 weeks) in length. Some programs combine two or more four-month work terms. Each engineering discipline has a specific work and study term schedule which students are required to follow. Please refer to the the study and work term sequence table below. (Note: Students in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering admitted from Associated Universities may be eligible for admission to a late entry work term sequence. AU students should consult the WIL Co-op office or their Faculty Co-op Advisor as soon as possible.)

Admission & Eligibility

Engineering Co-op is a degree option available to BEng students in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering.  Engineering Co-op is a selective program so  students who wish to be admitted to the Engineering Co-op option must apply through the Work-Integrated Learning & Co-operative Education department and meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Complete the requirements for the Diploma in Engineering by the required date
  • Be in academic Good Standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.3 for admission and continued eligibility
  • Eligible to work in Canada (international students with a valid study permit must apply for a co-op work permit)
  • Be proficient in oral and written English
  • Motivated and capable of handling the extra workload of preparing for and actively participating in a job search while carrying a full course load

Engineering students typically apply for Co-op eight (8) months prior to the first work term.  Once accepted into the Co-op program, students must register for, and complete the Engineering Co-op Orientation Course (ENGI 8890).

Work terms do not begin until the third year of the engineering program. All programs end on an academic term rather than a work term to enable formal integration of workplace and classroom learning.  In addition to satisfying performance requirements for the Co-op employer, work terms require registration in work term courses which have academic requirements that must be completed in order to receive a passing grade.

Co-operative Program Designation.  Students who have successfully completed the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering and who, in addition, have successfully completed three four-month work terms, each of a minimum of 14 weeks, with a minimum of 35 hours per week, or equivalent as determined by the Department and the Co-op office, will receive the “Co-operative Education” designation on their degree.
