This course explores the flourishing of English literary culture from the Tudor humanists (such as Sir Thomas More) and courtly makers (Sir Thomas Wyatt) to the Elizabethan sonnet writers (Sir Philip Sidney) and plain style poets (Ben Jonson). Shakespeare’s poetry, Spenser’s Faerie Queene, and selected works by women authors (including Queen Elizabeth herself) will be represented in the syllabus.
