Welcome - Treaty in Contemporary Society INDG 4001   Treaty in Contemporary Society
CREDIT HOURS: 3
Treaty is the foundation of the Canadian state, and Dalhousie University’s land acknowledgement states that “we are all treaty people.” Despite the growing visibility of land acknowledgements, few outside the field of Aboriginal law study treaties closely or relate them to contemporary life in treaty territory. This course will examine archival treaty documents, critically analyze and discuss the contents of treaties in depth, and relate that analysis to the growing scholarship on treaties in Canada. More broadly, the course examines the question of what role treaties—past and present—have in reconciling relationships between Indigenous nations and the settler states that occupy their territories.
