BA (120 credit hour) Double Major in Black and African Diaspora Studies and another subject

Students must obtain at least 60 and no more than 84 credit hours beyond the 1000 level in two allied subjects with no fewer than 30 and not more than 48 in either. 

Please note that the program requirements consist of two types of courses for the BAFD program: specific BAFD courses and "selectives," which are additional courses contributing to the BAFD program. These selectives are categorized into three groups:

Group A: African Diaspora and the Black Atlantic

Group B: History, Society, and Cultures of Africa

Group C: Race, Ethnicity, and Migration.

Pre-requisite Requirement

1000 level

  • BAFD 1000.03: Introduction to Black and African Diaspora Studies should be taken in the first year of study, if possible.  It must be taken before or at the same time as BAFD 2005: Introduction to African Canadian Studies.

Required Courses

2000 level

  • BAFD/CANA/SOSA 2005: Introduction to African Canadian Studies.
  • BAFD/HIST 2280: African Nova Scotian History.

4000 level

  • BAFD 4000.03: Capstone Class Issues in Black and African Diaspora Studies.

And:

Between 21 and 39 credit-hours drawn from “selective” course lists A, B and C.   Credits earned from these lists must include a minimum of:

  • 6 credit hours from list A
  • 6 credit hours from list B
  • 3 credit hours from list C
    • Additionally, selectives courses must be taken from three or more subjects (course codes) within Dalhousie.
