CREDIT HOURS: 3
This class is dedicated to examining how peoples of the Islamicate lands (primarily Muslims, but also including Jews and Christians) interacted with and represented foreign societies and associated myths and legends during the medieval and early modern period. While travel accounts will represent part of the primary source material for this course, students will also be introduced to "wonder books", cosmographical texts which represented the world with a fantastical and supernatural focus. These original texts were written in Arabic, Persian and Ottoman Turkish, but all class material will be translated into English.
