This class examines the intersections between society, mental health, and mental illness. The course focuses on the social determinants of mental health and illness, how mental health and illness are defined, and the social consequences of mental health and illness. Topics covered in this class include how race, gender, and class intersect with mental health and illness, debates about what does and does not count as an official mental disorder, how social factors impact our mental health (or mental flourishing), how forms of deviance and everyday experiences become situated as mental disorders, the physiological consequences of psychological stress, and stigmatization.
