Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree Program

PhD REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates proceeding from an MSc degree in Chemistry:

REQUIRED:

  • CHEM 9530.00 - Doctoral Thesis - Original research, together with preparation and oral defence of a thesis, is required
  • CHEM 5509.00 - Graduate Student Seminar I (NOT required for candidates who completed MSc at Dalhousie)
  • CHEM 6509.00 - Graduate Student Seminar II
  • 12 credit hours of chemistry courses at the graduate level
    • six credit hours of Core Chemistry Classes (5000-level)
    • six credit hours of graduate classes are required, which must include at least three credit-hours of 6000-level (1.5 credit-hours) Chemistry Graduate Modules.

PhD qualifying examination is normally completed within 18 months of their start date.

MSc degree in chemistry from another institution may receive credit for one 3 credit hour graduate-level class, but the student must request advanced placement.


Candidates proceeding from a BSc degree:

  • CHEM 9530.00 - Doctoral Thesis - Original research, together with preparation and oral defence of a thesis, is required
  • CHEM 5509.00 - Graduate Student Seminar I
  • CHEM 6509.00 - Graduate Student Seminar II
  • 12 credit hours of chemistry courses at the graduate level
    • six credit hours of Core Chemistry Classes (5000-level)
    • six credit hours of graduate classes are required, which must include at least three credit-hours of 6000-level (1.5 credit-hours) Chemistry Graduate Modules.
