Minor in Black and African Diaspora Studies
This minor is available to students registered in a 120-credit hour Bachelor of Applied Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Community Design, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Informatics, Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) program.
Please note that the program requirements consist of two types of courses for the BAFD program: specific BAFD courses and "selectives," which are additional courses contributing to the BAFD program. These selectives are categorized into three groups:
Group A: African Diaspora and the Black Atlantic
Group B: History, Society, and Cultures of Africa
Group C: Race, Ethnicity, and Migration.
Students must take 18 credits in the study area above the 1000 level as described below.
Pre-requisite Requirement
1000 level
- BAFD 1000.03: Introduction to Black and African Diaspora Studies should be taken in the first year of study, if possible. It must be taken before or at the same time as BAFD 2005: Introduction to African Canadian Studies.
Required Courses
2000 level
- BAFD 2005.03: Introduction of African Canadian Studies
- BAFD 2280.03 African Nova Scotia History
Elective Requirements:
- 12 credit hours at or above the 3000 level, selected from approved selectives for the Major in BAFD studies program. A minimum of three credits from each of the selective groups A, B, and C must be included.
Additional Information:
- If the minor subject is taken in conjunction with an honours program, grades in the minor subject must be "C" or better
- BAFD 1000.03: Introduction to Black and African Diaspora Studies is strongly recommended for students completing a minor in BAFD
- Courses cannot be counted as both core and elective minor requirements
