Certificate in Black and African Diaspora Studies
The Certificate in Black and African Diaspora Studies provides learners with an overview of current and historical experiences, philosophies, and cultures of Black people in Canada and the wider African diaspora. Students will develop awareness and understanding of the Black experience through core courses dedicated to topics in Black and African Diaspora Studies and a selection of interdisciplinary elective courses. Learners do not need to be enrolled in a degree program to take this certificate. This certificate is 15 credit hours.
Admission requirements/eligibility
This certificate is open to current students in any undergraduate degree program and to non-degree students who meet the standard undergraduate admission requirements for Dalhousie as an undergraduate Non-Degree or Special Student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (both embedded and stand-alone).
To enroll in the Black and African Diaspora Studies Certificate, students must declare the certificate through Dal Online and notify the Certificate Coordinator.
Students must complete all course requirements and use the “apply to graduate” portal to obtain their certificate. Students completing a concurrent degree program should do this when they apply to graduate from their degree program.
Requirements
Students must take 15 credit hours including:
- BAFD 1000.03: Introduction to Black and African Diaspora Studies
AND
12 credit hours of approved electives, including:
A minimum of 3 credit hours from
- BAFD 2005.03: Introduction of African Canadian Studies
- BAFD 2280.03 African Nova Scotia History
AND
- The remaining credit hours must be chosen from the list of approved selectives (lists A, B, C) for the Major in Black and African Diaspora Studies (BAFD) program
