Eligibility: This certificate is open to currently registered Dalhousie students.
Overview: The Certificate in Human Physiology provides students with an opportunity to specialize in physiological studies through courses offered in the Medical Sciences, Biology, Neuroscience, and Kinesiology undergraduate programs, as well as experiential learning opportunities. The learning outcomes will vary between students and depend on their main area of undergraduate studies, as well as on individual interests. Concentrating on one or more cross-cutting themes, students enrolled in the certificate program may choose to:
- Examine the function and role of particular organ systems in human performance and disease.
- Analyze the function of the nervous and endocrine systems to appreciate how they regulate bodily functions and behaviour.
- Explore physiological mechanisms at molecular and cellular levels to develop a more thorough understanding of physiological and pathophysiological processes at a higher organizational level.
Admission to Certificate: Students should enrol in the Certificate Program in Human Physiology in their third year of studies. To enrol, students must declare the certificate through Dal Online (https://dalonline.ca >Web for Students>Admissions>Declare Major/Minor/Certificate) and notify the Certificate Coordinator by e-mail.
To graduate with the Certificate, students must apply to graduate with a Certificate at the time they apply to graduate from their degree program.
Certificate Requirements:
1. A minimum grade of at least B- is required in 6 credit hours of the following core courses:
2. A grade of at least B- required in 15 elective credit hours chosen from the list of courses below. Courses from the list of core courses can be taken as electives if they are not already used to fulfill core course requirements. No more than one 2000-level course can be used towards elective credits. A maximum of 9 credit hours from any one stream (PHYL, NESC, BIOL, KINE) can be used.

- KINE 4704 Cardiorespiratory Dynamics in Exercise
3. At least 6 credit hours of experiential learning or independent research. Research projects have to be conceptually or methodologically related to Physiology and be approved by the certificate program committee. Suitable courses for this requirement include PHYL 3600, PHYL 3601, NESC 3001, NESC 3100, NESC 3101, NESC 4501, NESC 4502, SCIE 3100, SCIE 4101, SCIE 4102, SCIE 4901, SCIE 4902, BIOL 3800, BIOL 4806, BIOL 4807, BIOL 4901, BIOL 4902, KINE 4801, KINE 4802, and KINE 4900X/Y.
