COMM 3203 Financial Institutions

This course is designed to introduce students to the structure and operations of financial institutions in Canada, and the role they play in the growth and operation of capital markets. The class content includes reviewing the operation and functioning of various types of financial institutions and their roles in the economy. An emphasis will be put on measuring different types of risks and methods for managing these risks for financial institutions, particularly the banks. The topics include (but are not limited to) interest rate risk management, credit risk management, market risk management, regulation, and so forth. The role of derivative securities in various hedging strategies will also be reviewed.
