This course explores substance use from a perspective that considers the complex human, social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental factors that have a role in contemporary substance use. Effective health promotion strikes a balance between people and their environments and focuses attention beyond individuals to consider the social, economic, and environmental factors that impact attitudes, decisions, and behaviours. Students will engage in class discussions, written assignments, and case studies to explore the systems, the policies and the harm reduction approaches for ethical substance use and treatment programs.
