This course focuses on the growing importance of habitat-forming marine plants, including mangroves, saltmarshes, seagrass meadows, kelp forests and other seaweed beds. We cover issues around wild harvesting, aquaculture, blue carbon storage, bioprospecting, habitat restoration, ecosystem-based management, and climate change. Class format includes overview lectures, case-studies, discussions, and interactive work.

FORMAT COMMENTS: One 1.5-hour session per week: overview lecture plus activity for student engagement. Second 1.5-hour session per week: 3 student-led mini-lectures plus active discussion

PREREQUISITES: BIOL 2060.03 and OCEA 2000X/Y.06 (or OCEA 2001.03 and OCEA 2002.03) and two of any of the following: MARI 3063.03/BIOL 3063.03 or BIOL 3065.03 or MARI 3221.03/BIOL 3221.03 or MARI 3602.03 or MARI 3623.03/BIOL 3623.03/ENVS 3623.03 or MARI 3664.03/BIOL 3664.03 /ENVS 3664.03 or BIOL 3761.03/MARI 3761.03.
