This course offers students an opportunity to explore principles of historical performance practice in music prior to 1800 through experiential learning based on historical documents. Topics such as instruments, ornamentation, dance-forms, tempo and articulation will be covered through weekly readings and practicums. Students will have access to the Fountain School’s Historical Instrument Collection and will be required to complete both academic and performance assignments. The course may focus on a particular period and/or national tradition, and students may be required to participate in a large-scale historical production.
