Minor in Theatre - Gender in Theatre: A Cross-Cultural Survey
THEA 3911 Gender in Theatre: A Cross-Cultural Survey
CREDIT HOURS: 3
This course examines the roles gender has played in the shaping of world theatre alongside the roles the theatre has played in the shaping of various cultural conceptions of gender. By exploring plays and performances from Europe, North America, China, Japan, India, Iran and/or other traditions, we will strive to understand the ways in which various forms of representation reflect their cultures’ governing images of masculinity and femininity. In the process, we will interrogate the historical and cultural variability of the notion of “gender” itself. The main objective of the course will be to ask how gender determines performers’ choices in various cultures, and to see how gender itself can actually be shaped by performance.
