Beginning in the colonial period and proceeding to the present day, this course will examine the ways in which Africans have engaged with various challenges to peace and security. We will address such issues as: resistance to colonial rule; colonial policies and practices as drivers of conflict; African elites and governance; Cold War dynamics; democratic transitions and security; protests, violence and state responses to organised opposition; pervasive criminality and vigilantism; and post-conflict justice and security initiatives.
