CLAS 1011 Ancient Greece and Rome

A survey of the ancient civilisations of Greece and Rome, with a focus on their politics, social and cultural institutions, and military history. We chart the rise of the Greek city-state, the glory of Athens, and the transformation of the Greek world by Alexander the Great before turning to the expansion of Rome from humble beginnings to its central place in the history of Europe, the fall of the Republic and the ups and downs of Empire. This is an introductory course and no special preparation is required; there is no foreign language requirement. "Please note that this class does not fulfill the Writing Course Requirement."
