Minor in Classics: Ancient Philosophy - Paganism
CLAS 2026 Paganism
CREDIT HOURS: 3
In this class we examine the development of ancient religious systems in Greece, Rome, and neighbouring peoples from the dawn of recorded history to the triumph of Christianity. From hero cult and civic ritual to the coalescence of myth and pantheon, from superstition and secret initiation to divine kingship, we will range across the full breadth of "pagan" (pre-monotheist) religious experience, including the thousand-year dialogue of religious practice and poetic or philosophic discussion of the gods.
