Political Science - Democratic Theory POLI 3475   Democratic Theory
CREDIT HOURS: 3
What does it mean to be a democracy? Does it have to be anchored in nineteenth-century western liberal ideas and values, or are there other ways to do democracy? How should we think about governments which continue to hold elections but have been trying to dismantle checks on leaders’ power, curtail citizens’ rights, and marginalize or exclude some groups within society? On a global level, is democracy flourishing or is it in crisis? While this course is primarily focused on theoretical debates, there will also be some attention to varieties of democratic practice in the real world.
