This course will trouble the construction of urban space as settler territory. Students will examine factors shaping the development of Indigenous cultural, national, or pan-national identities in urban space through a variety of scholarly and artistic media. What forms of settler colonialism do Indigenous people confront in urban space? What social and cultural factors led to the emergence of the American Indian Movement or Idle No More? What questions are raised or answered by a photo series such as ‘Concrete Indians’?
