Linguistics is the science of language, and this course is designed to serve as an introduction to the fundamental concepts of its core areas: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Linguistic theories, methods and approaches are used in various other fields, such as speech and language pathology, language teaching and learning, translation, language assessment (e.g. in speech therapy), natural language processing, and clinical data analysis. Linguistic research applications include speech recognition and synthesis tools, data mining tools, search engines, automatic summarizers, etc. Some of the topics covered in this course are requirements or relevant in speech and language related programmes in health, medical and computer sciences. The course in taught in English and has no prerequisite.
NOTES: This course does not satisfy the French degree program requirements. French Majors and Honours students may take this course as an elective.
