This course surveys the history of film from its invention in the 1890s to the 1950s. Students will learn about the aesthetic, social, and technological changes that affected the development of cinema. The course addresses films from both the silent and sound eras, and from film industries around the world. Artistic movements that may be studied include Soviet Montage, German Expressionism, Classical Hollywood, Neorealism, and the African-American 'race films'.
