Certificate in Heritage Studies - Indigenous Pol in Canada POLI 2215   Indigenous Pol in Canada
CREDIT HOURS: 3
This course explores the contested relationship between Indigenous peoples in what we call Canada and the Canadian settler state. In both historical and contemporary contexts, we examine the central political and legal issues, cases, and events that shape Indigenous peoples’ realities and lived experiences in Canada. The course begins with an overview of colonization in British North America, moving to the treaty process, the evolution of Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples, and discussions of new opportunities for and articulations of self-determination. Dominant themes include nationhood, identity, colonialism, autonomy, and Indigenous resurgence. Some key questions include how the state is understood and experienced by Indigenous peoples; how Indigenous peoples conceptualize and pursue self-determination; and the ongoing effects of anti-Indigenous racism, misogyny, and colonialism in Canada.
