This course is an introduction to medieval Jewish philosophy as it developed in Arabic. Special attention will be given to the first systematic Judeo-Arabic thinker Muqammis, the Jewish Neoplatonists Ibn Gabirol and Ibn Saddiq, Judah Halevi, and of course Moses Maimonides (1135-1204), one of the greatest Jewish thinkers of all time, with emphasis on his famous treatise The Guide of the Perplexed. Maimonides’ stance on such issues as God’s incorporeality, creation, and prophecy will be examined.
