CSCI 1802 Computing in Modern Society

This course will examine the impacts of computer science on 21st-century life as portrayed in feature films, documentaries, and selected chapters by thought-leading writers. Eleven films will be screened in lectures throughout the term, supported by curated readings and discussion, and paired with a subsequent writing lab to solidify ideas. Students will critically assess advances such as personal computing, social media, mobile computing, video games, big data, and artificial intelligence. The course will show the interplay between society and computing and strengthen students' abilities in research, analysis, and communicating complicated ideas in short essays and presentations.
