This course explores the history of American capitalism from the colonial period to present. Among the major topics treated include agriculture, labor, and commerce in the colonial-era Atlantic world; slavery and its afterlife; industrialization and the rise of "big business"; the development of consumer culture; the rise and decline of organized labor; the changing position of the United States in the global economy, and recent trends toward deindustrialization and growing inequalities of income and wealth.
