Jeff D and Martha Edwards Scholarship
Hugh Maccagno established this scholarship in 2007 in memory of Jeff and Martha Edwards. As a young child living in the village of Lac La Biche in northeast Alberta, Hugh Maccagno clearly recalls his father speaking to Mr. Edwards and afterwards commenting "What a fine gentleman he is." Mr. Edwards, a black man dressed in a suit, tie, and hat, was in Lac La Biche coaching his baseball team from Amber Valley, Alberta. His father’s words continue to inspire Hugh as they were voiced at a time when black people were subjected to so much discrimination in the US and Canada. Jeff Edwards was 21 when he and many other blacks left Oklahoma for Canada in 1910 seeking an escape from segregation and prejudice in the American South. He and his wife Martha homesteaded as pioneers at Amber Valley, raised 10 children, and contributed enormously to the community. Mr. Edwards embraced his new citizenship with pride, and when he died in 1973 at the age of 90, was remembered as a proud Canadian citizen who epitomized the spirit of black pioneers who settled the Canadian West. It is with these sentiments that Hugh Maccagno established this scholarship, which serves to provide post-secondary education to many from the large and long-established Black community of Nova Scotia.
Eligibility: Available to Black students entering any program at Dalhousie University directly from high school, with preference given to Canadian students of Black African descent, followed by native Black Bermudian students.
