Environmental Engineering - Applied Rock Mechanics
CIVL 4114 Applied Rock Mechanics
CREDIT HOURS: 3
Students will learn about the design of surface and underground excavations. Laboratory properties of intact rocks, theoretical and empirical rock failure criteria, engineering rock classifications and their applications for estimating mechanical properties of jointed rock masses and support design will be discussed. Laboratories will identify, measure, and describe geological structures, interpret geological maps and explore fundamental concepts of rock mechanics. Commercial software programs will be used to design ground support for surface and underground excavations.
